It’s time to officially kick off a brand new, creative season of Destination Imagination! The 2018-19 Team Challenges, as well as our Roadmap and Rules of the Road resources, are now available for download in the Resource Area. In order to view or download these materials, you must have a 2018-19 Team Number. (Please note: Program Materials can only be downloaded by the purchaser—Team Manager, school administrator, parent, etc.) If you don’t have a Team Number, you can purchase one at ShopDI.org.
NEW FOR THIS SEASON
Destination Imagination is now 100% digital. This includes the Team Challenges, Rules of the Road, Roadmap, Quick Start Guide, and Instant Challenge Practice Sets. By no longer providing printed copies of our Team Challenges and supporting materials, we will be reducing our ecological footprint and allowing room for new projects and priorities at the headquarters level. You will no longer have the option to receive or purchase a printed copy of these materials. Learn more about this initiative here.
WHAT IS DESTINATION IMAGINATION?
Destination Imagination (DI) is built on the knowledge that with each new generation, there is a need for critical thinkers with well-honed 21st century skills to solve the great and sometimes unknown challenges before us. Those skills must be practiced in multidisciplinary contexts that provide the right mix of challenge and relevancy to enable students to make connections and grow. DI’s Team Challenge Experience has 21st century skills building at its core, using the creative process to fully integrate the engagement of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics into exploratory, open-ended, hands-on educational experiences. In solving one of our Challenges, students become better at collaboration, creative and critical thinking, and problem solving, and learn the skills needed to succeed in school, their careers and beyond.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Students form a team (2-7 members) and are managed by an adult leader (Team Manager), who is often a parent or teacher. The Team Manager helps the team stay on track throughout the season, but does not directly help the team with its solution to the DI Challenge. After the team chooses their preferred DI Challenge—Technical, Scientific, Fine Arts, Engineering, Improvisational or Service Learning—they will begin working on a solution to that Challenge. Students typically work on their solutions for 2-4 months. Teams then have the opportunity to showcase their Challenge solutions to trained Appraisers at a tournament, as well as speak with their Appraisers about their solutions and how they came up with their ideas. Teams that qualify at the state level are invited to participate in Global Finals—the world’s largest celebration of creativity. Get an inside look at this season’s Team Challenges.
We also offer a non-competitive Early Learning Challenge, called Rising Stars, for preschool through second-grade students. Our Early Learning Challenge is an is an opportunity for kids to be creative, learn simple building and construction, become comfortable working in teams, and learn how to speak in front of an audience.
